Interview with Johannes Scharf

Hello, Mr Scharf! My name is Tuukka Kuru. Would you like to introduce yourself to the Finnish audience?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Sure, I am 31 years old and I was born in Richmond, Virginia. My father is German and my mother is American of British and German descent. I moved to Germany with my parents when I was one year old and have lived in Europe: that is Germany, Romania and the Netherlands, ever since. Even when, in my early twenties, I joined the US infantry, I was stationed in Bavaria after basic training in Georgia. After an apprenticeship as a landscaper I worked on a German container vessel as an engine cadet and had the unique opportunity to visit many so-called shit-hole countries. After I left the military, I studied History and Classical Archaeology at Heidelberg University from which I graduated in 2018. I have since been enrolled in a master’s programme. I started writing for right-wing journals in 2007 and my first book was published in 2011. It was banned in Germany a few years later…. My most recent book Kampf ums Dasein (Struggle for Existence) was published by Europa Terra Nostra in November 2019.

We have tried to get German speakers to our conferences a couple of times earlier, but they seem to be a bit reluctant to join conferences of this caliber. How are things going in Germany? We have heard about the PEGIDA movement and the Chemnitz riots, but we would like to know more about the current situation!

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I can imagine that many moderate activists from Germany would shy away from attending such a conference. Personally, I probably disagree with many speakers on certain topics like the JQ. However, I do not believe in guilt by association and I have never distanced myself from certain people, only from certain ideologies. I sincerely believe in the market place of ideas and the right of any individual to voice his or her opinions!
Things are not going well in Germany. PEGIDA has been a zombie for a couple of years now. The numbers at their rallies soon began to dwindle from 30,000 to just a few hundred protesters. There was a time when I thought this movement might spark a wider protest movement like in the late 1980s in the Democratic Republic of Germany but this opportunity is now gone.

How do people understand the term “German” nowadays? Does it refer strictly to the white-skinned, German-speaking population or has the meaning changed in the course of time?

Ø  Johannes
That depends on whom you ask. Let us stick to the law for this one: Up until 1999 one parent had to be German in order for the child to be a natural-born citizen (ius sanguinis). Since then, additionally, anyone born in Germany is automatically a citizen (ius soli). However, many people would in private conversation not refer to a German-born black man or Turk as German. At the same time, many people – especially college-educated youngsters – would.

We have seen pictures of German so-called Antifascists carrying posters saying “Do it again, Bomber Harris!” and fake maps where Germany has ceased to exist as a sovereign nation. Many Germans feel strong guilt for the WW-II-era crimes that they have never committed themselves. How can we fix this problem and raise the German identity back to its former glory?

I do not think this is likely to happen. It is true that there is a big deal of self-hatred in Germany that is partially due to an emphasis on German nationalism and militarism on the verge of WW I and war crimes committed in WW II, such as the Holocaust, in education as well as pop culture. However, I do not think that one could completely fix the problem by just changing the curriculum. Furthermore, I do not think that we will ever succeed in bringing about this necessary – albeit not sufficient – change in the curriculum because a vast majority of Germans will continue to vote for parties that endorse this sort of national masochism.

How do German nationalists like you yourself see Germans as a race? Do you support the idea of a somehow unique German nationhood, or do you see Germans as part of the larger Indo-European family?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I am only a nationalist in the sense that I am an anti-globalist. I do not see Germans as a race. Germans are a people (Volk) because of the language they speak and certain customs and traditions they share. Furthermore, they have had a short but intensive (to put it euphemistically) history that glued them together as a people and nurtured their feeling of unity. However, I have always held the opinion that a person from Lower Saxony (in the Northwest) had probably at least as much in common with the average Dutchman or even Englishman as with a fellow German from Saxony (in the East) or Austria.

Historically, Germans have distanced themselves from the Eastern European nations and described them as somewhat uncivilized and classified them as belonging to a lesser branch of the white race. What is your opinion on this old division between the civilized West and the barbaric East? Is it an outdated concept or an atavistic part of the German worldview?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I think that this toxic attitude has severely harmed the white race. I do not think that the ideology of Lebensraum (living space) in the East could have been popular in Germany if it had not been for this feeling of Germanic superiority. Maybe it is naïve, but I do not think it to be out of the question that WW II could have been prevented if it had not been for this venomous ideology of racial superiority over the alpine stock of the white race. However, the jingoism of the Poles could have sparked a war nevertheless. Looking back, chauvinism was really the cancer that poisoned all foreign relations in the 20th century (from Sarajevo to Sarajevo so to speak). Aggressive nationalism is anti-white. Ironically, the Slavic influence in East Germany is remarkably high and a large proportion of the population would classify as belonging to the alpine stock rather than the Nordic stock of the white race.

Can you tell us more about the cultural and political differences between West Germany and East Germany? How is it possible that the AfD is the largest party in many eastern cities despite all the anti-German propaganda?

Ø  Johannes
A friend of mine from Romania thinks this divide stems from the strong Slavic influence in East Germany. I can see where he is coming from. While a majority in all “purely Germanic” regions of the world such as Northwestern Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and most of the Anglosphere seem keen on committing ethnic suicide, it is namely alpine Eastern and Central Europe (including East Germany and Austria) as well as Italy that do not go along with this agenda of self-destruction. However, it should not be overlooked that most of these countries also share a similar socialist past to which one could point looking for answers. In the particular case of East Germany, a sense of second-class citizenship after the reunification of Germany some thirty years ago is deeply ingrained in the public consciousness. This is especially true for the working class. Greed rather than racial awareness are often at the bottom of their activism and the AfD received a good deal of voters from the socialist party Die Linke (literally “The Left”) which has traditionally been very strong in the states that formerly made up the Democratic Republic of Germany.

Can you tell us something about “Antideutsche” movement? How strongly is it connected to the radical Jewish left and what is their endgame? How strong is the Jewish cultural influence in modern Germany?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Anti-Germans are not a single group. It is a generic name referring to a mosaic of groups and individuals on the radical left who simply hate the concept of a German people and aim to bring about its destruction. While there are probably some mulattoes and a number of Jews in their ranks, the vast majority of them are ethnic Germans. Probably all of the latter type are guilt-ridden and have absolutely crossed the Rubicon to insanity. However, I would agree with them on one point: The anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist left definitely has an affinity to anti-Semitic thought patterns and as a consequence its rhetoric is often anti-Semitic or anti-Zionist. This is a fact that I find rather amusing and, as Stephen Miller recently did in an interview, I like to point this out at each and every occasion.

You are spokesman of the “Nova Europa” collective which is at least partly based on Arthur Kemp’s ideas. Would you like to tell us more about this collective and your relations with Mr. Kemp?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I am not the spokesman of the “Nova Europa Society” but I am one of the founding members and the current chairman of the association. In 2013, the year Arthur Kemp published Nova Europa. A European Survival Strategy in a Darkening World, I published a novel that dealt with the same topic: a plan B for white survival. In this novel (Das Kreuz des Südens. Exodus aus Europa) an identitarian (i.e. race-conscious) party wins the elections in New Zealand and the new foreign minister, a former South African by the name of van Buren, invites white settlers from all over the globe to come to New Zealand. This is what the concept of the ethnostate is all about: creating a safe haven for Europeans that insures the survival of our civilization. As with the invention of the wheel, different people just happened to draw the same conclusions trying to undo the Gordian knot. Neither Arthur Kemp nor I were the first to come up with the concept of the ethnostate. And even such predecessors as Wilmot Robertson, Richard McCulloch, Harold Covington and Richard Girnt Butler were hardly the first to contemplate this democratic solution of peaceful separation. One could instead even point to people like Senator Bilbo, James Monroe, after whom the capital of Liberia was named Monrovia, and, yes: Abraham Lincoln.
Thus far, our association is little more than a small think tank. We organize conferences and publish a journal but our financial resources are very limited to say the least. Sooner or later, a fund must come into being. Furthermore, an equivalent of the World Zionist Organization should be founded. The “Nova Europa Society” could then serve as an equivalent to the “Society of Jews” in Theodor Herzl’s novel The Old New Land by guiding the activities of the larger mass organization that would be first and foremost a colonization company and could even operate profit-oriented. I will discuss the matter with Arthur Kemp, who is a friend of mine, but I am not the right person to start a fund or a mass organization.

I know that the following questions can be tricky, but I think every German nationalist has faced them hundreds of times before: What is your stance on the Second World War, National Socialism and the Holocaust? How important is this question for modern German nationalists?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I think it would have been better for Western Civilization if the Third Reich had never existed. My great-grandfather was the mayor of a German village from 1933 to 1945. He was a WW-I veteran who had been wounded multiple times in combat. He lost one eye and a few fingers in WW I and both sons in WW II. My grandfather, who was an officer on the Eastern Front, lost his brother and his father in this senseless fratricidal war. I know that my great-grandfather was not a bad person but he was a National Socialist and I am not. Modern German nationalists are divided on the JQ and the Holocaust. While I believe that the Holocaust obviously occurred and ought to be condemned, I also insist on the fact that genocides were carried out by any race or civilization logistically capable of them. The Holocaust certainly does not justify the undoing of Germany just as slavery more than two and a half centuries ago does not justify the destruction of the United States by means of mass migration. I understand why some people on both sides of the isle seem to be obsessed with the Holocaust but I am not at all interested in numbers. It was wrong, in principle, to round up Jews and put them to work in concentration camps – let alone killing any given number of non-combatants – but this does not justify any measures ultimately leading to self-destruction. Case closed.

Ø  Tuukka Kuru
White fertility rates are dangerously low in every Western nation, excluding Ireland. How do we fix this extremely dire situation? Are we now witnessing the death of the nuclear family?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I think we are indeed. This development has a lot to do with the emergence of feminism and the welfare state as well as with the decline of religiosity.

Ø  Tuukka Kuru
What is your stance on religion? Should we accept secularism as a part of modernity, or should we try to change the current course?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I am an atheist in much the same way as Bertrand Russell was an atheist, who, in 1958, remarked: “I ought to call myself an agnostic; but, for all practical purposes, I am an atheist. I do not think the existence of the Christian God any more probable than the existence of the Gods of Olympus or Valhalla.” Obviously I would always be in favor of a secular state and I am deeply opposed to any sort of theocracy. However, I do recognize the benefits that come with a religious society in terms of cohesion and fertility rates. As another speaker at your conference, Dr. Edward Dutton, has pointed out multiple times, conservatism and religiosity go hand in hand in the United States. They are like two sides of the same coin.

You wrote a book about the White Ethnostate. Can you define the meaning of “ethnostate”? How should we apply the concept in practice?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Sure, an ethnostate is a state that comprises only or predominantly one éthnos. Many nation states in Europe are still ethnostates up until this day. Let’s take Finland as an example. In 2017 slightly more than 90 percent of the population were of Finish descent (including, of course, due to its history, people with Swedish and Russian ancestry), almost five percent of the population had moved to Finland from other European countries and only the remainder came from Africa or Asia. Now, whether one may call a country with less than five percent visible minorities an ethnostate or not is a question that is open to debate. Some people might find a lower percentage more tolerable. The important thing to remember is that the tide of color is constantly rising and non-white immigration into European countries and traditionally predominantly white societies overseas will not stop. Moreover, non-white immigrants have a higher birth rate than people native to the immigrants’ host nations. What we propose is simply a peaceful separation of those white people who care for the integrity of their race and civilization and those who could care less or have other priorities. The latter will be blessed with all the diversity they wish for while the former will build and maintain a safe haven or multiple safe havens for whites from all around the world. We need a constitution that guarantees the ongoing existence of our people. When it comes to applying the concept in practice, we should emulate the South Africans who founded the settlement of Orania in the early 1990s. Orania is now a prospering town in which the cultural heritage of the Afrikaners is not only kept alive but celebrated.

Many Finnish conservatives accept immigration if it is economically profitable. Germans opened their borders during 1950s to cheap Southern European and Turkish labor and nowadays they are counted in millions. Why are conservatives promoting this suicidal policy in almost all Western nations?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Well, ordinary conservatives have always been susceptible to the prospect of cheap labor. While I usually call myself a conservative in the true sense of the word, the term conservationist may actually suit our movement even better. People who try to protect the environment from global warming or certain species from going extinct are widely celebrated as heroes today. Yet at the same time, people who wish to protect the integrity of the races and thus preserve human biodiversity are seen as inherently evil. If they happen to be white, they are called “Nazis” and “white supremacists” although nothing could be farther from the truth. We simply aim to preserve what evolution has created in tens of thousands of years. There was a time before World War II when even the mainstream media recognized what was at the bottom of our activism. When the influential eugenicist and conservationist Madison Grant, author of The Passing of the Great Race, died in 1937, the New York Times’ obituary the following day read: “The preservation of the redwoods, of the bison, of the Alaskan caribou, of the bald eagle … of the spirit of the early American colonist … and of the purity of the ‘Nordic’ type of humanity in this country, were all his personal concerns, all products of the same urge in him to save precious things.”

What is your opinion about the current tensions between the EU and Russia? Should we see Russia as a threat to our way of life and if so, how should we react to this threat? What is your view on NATO?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Many people on the European New and Old Right look to Putin’s Russia as to a potential ally. They chafe under the continuing occupation. It is true that the United States have become the world’s policeman and imperial power they never wanted to be. The humanist republican tradition was anti-imperialistic by nature. The founding fathers would turn in their graves. While I understand the anti-American sentiments of many Europeans, I can find neither pleasure nor comfort in the thought of replacing one hegemon with another.

NATO is brain dead as Emmanuel Macron put it. It is quite amusing to watch them being too afraid of calling out Erdogan on his bs. While the United Nations and the Turks back the official government in Tripoli, some European nations support General Haftar and his Libyan National Army. Ultimately, the United States and Russia will have to become allied against China. Containment of China would be in the interest of Russia and the United States. Otherwise the Chinese will be the unrivalled superpower in the future and that would be the last thing any freedom-loving person could hope for. And I say that as an isolationist….

What is your opinion on monarchism and the former German Empire? Is it a glorious part of your nation’s past, or just an archaic part of your nation’s history?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
What can I say? The dismissal of Bismarck was a grave mistake. I think Wilhelm II was a good man but not far-sighted enough unfortunately. The German emperor was susceptible to all the jingoism that poisoned foreign relations at the time, although all he really wished for was recognition from other great powers such as the British Empire which he very much admired. I must point out that I myself am not a monarchist in the least bit. The notion of having to bow down before another human being wearing a fancy golden hat referred to as crown seems utterly ridiculous to me. I am a republican in the sense that I am opposed to any kind of one-man rule. John Adams seems to have favored a similar definition of the word republic when he stated that a republic was a “government whose sovereignty is vested in more than one person.” This being said, it ought not to be overlooked that the second German Empire had a parliament and was thus not a pure monarchy but rather a sort of mixed government.

The topic for the upcoming conference is “Nova Europa,” which refers to the New European order after the collapse of the current individualist liberal democracy. Would you like to tell us something about your upcoming speech? What is your standpoint on this issue?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
I do not think that the current individualist liberal democracy will collapse. And I am not against democracies in the first place. I am neither solely a collectivist nor solely an individualist but rather both at the same time. If we cannot convince the majority to vote for their continued existence as a people, we ought to form new majorities elsewhere that will. I do not wish to impose my will onto an unwilling or reluctant majority. Such an attitude would make a mockery of my self-image as a democratic republican. Voluntary separation is the only solution in my opinion. This is exactly the approach of the “Nova Europa Society” since thus far every attempt to convince the majority has failed and will continue to do so. Most people simply happen to have other priorities. We accept this as a fact but, nevertheless, try to protect human biodiversity. I will elaborate on this strategy in my speech in April.

Is there any peaceful way to settle current demographic crisis in Germany? Should Germany be divided between different ethnicities, or should all non-Germans be sent away?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
Probably it would have been better for East Germany if there never had been a re-unification with West Germany. A German future on German soil is only possible if the states that formerly made up the Democratic Republic of Germany succeed from the Federal Republic of Germany and close their borders to non-European immigrants pouring into Europe from Africa and the Middle East. In this case, all Germans from West Germany who would rather see their children growing up in an ethnostate than in the multicultural environment of West Germany would naturally be welcomed by their Eastern brethren.

Who is the greatest German hero of all time and why?

Ø  Johannes Scharf
The greatest German war hero is probably Hans-Ulrich Rudel. He was the most decorated German serviceman of WW II and was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, a battleship and a cruiser, as well as 70 landing craft and 150 artillery emplacements. Moreover, he claimed 51 aerial victories and the destruction of 800 vehicles. When he was severely wounded in February 1945 and his right leg was amputated, he returned to the battlefield the following month and destroyed 26 more tanks until the end of the war. Other names that come to mind immediately are Heinrich Severloh who gunned down up to 2,000 enemy soldiers single-handedly on Omaha Beach using an MG 42 and two rifles, as well as Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen and Ernst Jünger. Another name I would like to throw out there is Dietrich von Choltitz who was the last German governor of Paris and prevented its destruction by not carrying out Hitler’s command to level the French capital to the ground. Therefore the Louvre, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower were left standing. Hitler’s order read: “The city must not fall into the enemy’s hands except lying in complete rubble.”

Tell us three personal things about yourself that the public hardly knows!

I sang in a gospel choir when I was a little child. In elementary school, my favorite author was Karl May.
